EMTT TherapyReaching the Pain Other Treatments Can't Touch

You've tried physio, rest, maybe even injections. The pain fades for a while, then comes right back. You're starting to wonder if something deeper is being missed.

It works at the cellular level.

EMTT delivers electromagnetic pulses that influence cell signalling pathways linked to inflammation and repair, reaching areas that hands and tools can't.

It's not just about the device.

At Unpain, EMTT is used within a full treatment plan, combined with shockwave therapy, manual care, and targeted rehabilitation based on your specific case.

Results build over time.

Research shows improvements during and after a course of EMTT sessions, with benefits persisting at follow-up. It's designed to support lasting change, not just short-term relief.

60-minute one-on-one assessment + treatment plan.

No pressure, no contracts.

Sounds Familiar?

If any of this sounds like you, keep reading.

You've had physio, massage, maybe even injections, and it helped for a while but didn't last.

You've been told to "just rest" or "learn to live with it," and that didn't sit right.

You don't want injections or surgery again, but you're not sure what else is out there.

You just want to sleep, move, or work without thinking about pain all the time.

You're open to something different, but you need to understand it first.

Understand EMTT in a Few Minutes

Before you read another word, this short video explains what EMTT actually does inside your body, why it works for some problems and not others, and how we use it at Unpain.

The Basics

What is EMTT?

EMTT (Electromagnetic Transduction Therapy) is a non-invasive treatment that delivers brief, high-energy electromagnetic pulses to a targeted area of your body from outside the skin. No needles, no surgery, no medication.

Think of it as a "signal amplifier" for the tissue environment. Unlike shockwave, which mechanically stimulates tissue, EMTT provides a patterned electromagnetic stimulus that can nudge your cells' own signalling pathways toward a more repair-supportive state.

Originally developed from the broader field of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, EMTT is a higher-energy implementation now used in musculoskeletal clinics worldwide for pain and function problems that haven't responded to standard care alone.

How it works in your body

In short, EMTT works by delivering electromagnetic pulses that influence your cells' own repair and inflammation pathways. It doesn't mask pain. It targets the biology underneath it.

WHY IS THIS DIFFERENT

How EMTT Compares to What You've Already Tried

Physiotherapy alone

Physiotherapy and exercise programs can improve pain and function, but some people plateau and don't get the full result they're looking for.

EMTT added to physio

A randomized controlled trial showed that adding EMTT to a physiotherapy and pain management program produced significantly greater reductions in pain and disability compared to physiotherapy without EMTT.

Anti-inflammatory medication

Anti-inflammatory medication can reduce pain temporarily, but it doesn't address the underlying tissue biology or support repair processes.

Cellular-level influence

EMTT influences inflammation-related signalling pathways at the cellular level. Rather than blocking pain signals chemically, it nudges the tissue environment toward repair.

Cortisone injections

Cortisone injections can numb pain for weeks or months, but the relief often fades and repeated injections carry their own risks.

Non-invasive, durable response

EMTT is non-invasive and targets the damaged tissue directly. In clinical research, benefits persisted at follow-up assessments weeks after the last session, suggesting a more sustained response.

Shockwave alone

Shockwave therapy on its own can be effective, but some cases need more support to get the full result.

Combined with shockwave

A randomized trial showed that combining shockwave therapy with EMTT produced better pain and function outcomes than shockwave with sham EMTT — the two work through different mechanisms and complement each other.

EMTT is not a replacement for every treatment. For some conditions, it works best when combined with manual therapy, exercise, or other approaches. We'll tell you exactly what combination makes sense for your case.

OUR EXPERIENCE

EMTT at Unpain Clinic

Unpain Clinic has used EMTT in daily practice since 2025, integrating it into treatment plans for patients with persistent musculoskeletal pain who need more than standard conservative care alone.

We use a Swiss-engineered STORZ Medical device, chosen for its precision, reliability, and the fact that it is backed by published randomized controlled trials. This is the same technology platform referenced in peer-reviewed clinical research.

EMTT at Unpain is never used in isolation. It is always part of a broader plan that may include shockwave therapy, manual care, and targeted rehabilitation. The results depend on how it's combined, when it's introduced, and how your treatment is adjusted along the way.

YOUR EXPERIENCE

What EMTT Treatment Looks Like at Unpain

INITIAL VISIT

Assessment and Treatment Planning

We assess more than just the painful area. Your clinician evaluates the full kinetic chain, movement quality, and your complete history to understand what's driving your pain.

We determine whether EMTT is appropriate for your specific case, or whether a different combination of therapies makes more sense.

You walk out with a clear written plan, including treatment recommendations and transparent pricing before you commit to anything.

SESSIONS 1 to 8

Active Treatment Phase

Each EMTT session takes about 20 minutes. The applicator is positioned over the treatment area. Most people feel little or no sensation during the session.

EMTT is typically combined with shockwave therapy and other modalities as part of your broader treatment plan. Your clinician adjusts the combination based on how you respond.

Progress is tracked between sessions using pain and function measures so your treatment is adjusted as you improve.

Goal: meaningful reduction in pain and improved function within the first 6 to 8 sessions.

6+ WEEKS AND BEYOND

Progressive Recovery and Aftercare

Strengthening and rehabilitation exercises are layered in alongside or after your EMTT sessions to support long-term durability.

Digital coaching and home exercises help you maintain and build on your progress between visits and after your treatment course is complete.

Follow-up assessments track whether your improvement is holding. Your clinician will be clear about when treatment is complete and when to return if needed.

DURING TREATMENT

What Does EMTT Actually Feel Like?

  1. 1

    Before your session

No special preparation is needed. Wear comfortable clothing. When you arrive, your clinician will review your plan and position you for treatment.

  2. 2

    During the session

Each session lasts about 20 minutes. Most people feel very little — sometimes a mild warmth or a faint pulsing sensation. In highly inflamed areas there may be slight discomfort, but it's typically tolerable.

  3. 3

    After your session

Some people notice mild redness at the treatment area, which usually fades quickly. There are no significant restrictions — you can return to your normal day.

Most people describe EMTT as barely noticeable during the session. Unlike shockwave, there's typically no significant discomfort. Your clinician adjusts the treatment throughout based on your comfort. You're always in control.

EVIDENCE

What the Research Says About EMTT

EMTT has been studied in peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials over recent years. Here's what the published evidence shows.

In a randomized controlled trial, adding EMTT to physiotherapy and pain management reduced pain intensity by approximately 65% over the treatment and follow-up period.

The same trial showed disability scores improved by approximately 61% when EMTT was added to a conservative care program.

A separate randomized trial found that combining shockwave therapy with EMTT produced better outcomes in pain and function than shockwave combined with sham EMTT.

Improvements measured at the end of treatment were maintained at follow-up assessments weeks after the last session, suggesting lasting rather than temporary effects.

Preclinical research on EMTT in bone cell and tendon cell models shows effects on gene expression, repair pathways, and tissue-level biology consistent with a regenerative mechanism.

Evidence is strongest for musculoskeletal pain and function outcomes, particularly when EMTT is used alongside other therapies. For other areas, research is still growing. We'll tell you where your case fits during your assessment.

Outcomes are group averages from clinical trials. Individual results vary.

SAFETY

Is EMTT Safe?

EMTT is widely considered safe and well-tolerated. In clinical trial reporting, no clinically relevant adverse events were linked to the treatment itself.

Common side effects

  • Temporary skin redness at the treatment area (usually fades shortly after the session).

  • Mild warmth or slight discomfort in highly sensitive areas during treatment (manageable and temporary).

Who is EMTT a good fit for?

  • People with persistent musculoskeletal pain who haven't responded fully to standard conservative care alone.

  • People looking for a non-invasive, non-surgical option to complement their existing rehabilitation.

  • People who want to avoid or reduce reliance on medication and injections.

  • People with acute injuries who may benefit from early biologic stimulation alongside their recovery plan.

Who should speak with a clinician first?

  • People with pacemakers, cochlear implants, insulin pumps, neurostimulators, or other active electronic implants (this is a contraindication).

  • People who are pregnant should discuss this with their clinician before treatment.

  • People with passive metal implants or joint replacements should inform their clinician so safety precautions can be reviewed.

  • People with disorders of perception (such as certain neuropathies) should discuss their situation with their clinician.

Not sure if EMTT is right for you? That's exactly what the assessment is for. We'll review your full history before recommending any treatment.
